What is Emotional Purging? A Clinical Guide to Somatic Release

You are sitting in a quiet moment, or perhaps mid-conversation in a therapy session, when a massive surge of weeping takes over. It isn’t sparked by a specific thought or a recent event. Your body begins to shake, your chest feels hot, and for a moment, it feels as if you are losing control.

In clinical practice, we refer to this as emotional purging or somatic release.

As the founder of Reclaiming Wellness and a trauma-informed therapist, I often see clients who feel “broken.” Their bodies are reacting in ways their minds don’t understand. However, when we view these experiences through the lens of nervous system regulation, we see they are actually a profound sign of health. It is your body finally feeling safe enough to offload the survival energy it has carried for years.

Understanding the Emotional Purge

Emotional purging is the physiological process where the body releases stored survival energy from the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This is a biological “reset” of the nervous system. It is entirely separate from logical thinking or emotional “venting.”

What to Know: Emotional purging is the involuntary discharge of trapped traumatic energy—specifically stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline—that was mobilized during a past stress response. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory, this somatic release allows the body to exit “survival mode” and return to a state of balance and connection.

Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Always Enough: The “Bottom-Up” Perspective

Many clients visit our Albuquerque therapy practice feeling frustrated. They have often spent years in conventional talk therapy without finding relief. They “know” they are safe intellectually. Yet, their bodies still react as if a threat is immediate. This is especially true in our modern “burnout economy,” where the relentless pressure to produce keeps our systems in a state of high alert. This is because trauma is not just a story; it is a physiological state.

In clinical terms, we distinguish between Top-Down and Bottom-Up processing:

  • Top-Down: Utilizing the analytical brain (prefrontal cortex) to manage emotions through logic and discussion.
  • Bottom-Up: Addressing the sentient body (nervous system and brainstem) to release trauma at its physiological source. This approach is central to Somatic Experiencing, a clinical model developed by Dr. Peter Levine to resolve the physical symptoms of trauma.

Emotional purging is a purely “Bottom-Up” event. It is your body’s innate wisdom bypassing the thinking brain to clear out survival patterns that are no longer serving you.

The Somatic Release Spectrum: 7 Common Signs

I use the Somatic Release Spectrum to help my clients identify these physical manifestations. While I have previously written about 9 signs your body is releasing trauma, these seven symptoms are the primary markers of an active, healthy purge:

  1. Vigorous Shaking (Neurogenic Tremors): This is the body “shaking off” a threat response. It is much like an animal in the wild after escaping a predator.
  2. Noticeable Temperature Shifts: Vivid, localized heat or deep chills reflect the rapid recalibration of your system as the stress response deactivates.
  3. Yawning or Deep Sighing: A sign that the diaphragm is “un-bracing.” This allows the body to shift from a high-alert state to a state of rest.
  4. Digestive Activity: “Gurgling” or stomach movement occurs as blood flow returns to the gut after being diverted for survival.
  5. Motor Spasms or Twitching: Often felt in the core muscles, these are “micro-releases” of persistent physical tension.
  6. Tingling or “Electric” Sensations: As nerve signals recalibrate, you may feel a sense of electricity or “pins and needles” in your hands or feet.
  7. Heavy Crying without a Narrative: This is a physical flush of accumulated stress chemicals. It often occurs without a specific sad thought or memory.

Interpreting Your Body’s Signals: Sensation Mapping

Use this table to correlate your physical sensations with the emotional energy your body is currently processing.

The Science: Polyvagal Theory and the Vagus Nerve

At Reclaiming Wellness, one of the approaches our therapists are trained in is the Polyvagal Theory. Your Vagus nerve is the “information superhighway” of your body. When you experience trauma, this nerve can trigger a “dorsal vagal” state—a state of numbness, dissociation, or “freeze.”

Emotional purging is the Vagus nerve signaling that the “threat” is over. When we purge, we are re-wiring the neural pathways that dictate our stress response. This allows for greater long-term resilience. According to research published by the NIH, addressing these autonomic imbalances is essential for long-term recovery from PTSD and chronic stress.

Healthy Release vs. Emotional Flooding: A Critical Distinction

It is vital to know when a release is healing and when it is becoming overwhelming.

  • A Healthy Purge (Processing): You feel the intensity, but you have “dual awareness.” You can feel the crying and feel your feet on the floor. You feel like you are “draining.”
  • Emotional Flooding (Reliving): You lose your sense of time or place. You feel like you are “drowning” in the past event. This often leads to re-traumatization without professional support.

Somatic Aftercare: Supporting the Integration Phase

Because an emotional purge is a major physiological event, we recommend the following aftercare for the 24-48 hours following a release:

  1. Hydration: Flush stress hormones (cortisol) from your system by drinking plenty of water.
  2. Orienting: Use your senses to come back to the present. Name five things you see and four things you can touch.
  3. Vocal Toning: Making a low “Voo” sound on a long exhale vibrates the Vagus nerve, signaling safety to the brainstem.
  4. Gentle Movement: Opt for slow walks or stretching exercises for anxiety to help the body settle.
